Possibly interested in a teaching-focused career?

Occasional announcements are posted to the teaching track faculty Piazza. (This is a SIGCSE-affiliated group, so not restricted to UC Berkeley.) Teaching and CS education research are distinct, but obviously overlap. 

• PhD students interested in more experience in teaching specifically should check out the Teaching Minor, which is an acceptable outside minor for the EECS PhD program.
• Undergraduates can pursue a minor in Education entirely online.
• Terminal-MS or PhD students interested in education research should check out the Learning Sciences Certificate in Instructional Design, Learning Technologies, and Education Research from the Graduate School of Education’s SESAME program
• CS 5th year MS students who focus on education are also eligible for Graduate certificates, and can often fund their program through GSI appointments (unlike most other 5th year MS students) and pursue a project related to education technology with us. Popular projects focus on some combination of developing and deploying courseware in EECS and non-EECS courses, and doing quantitative experiments to determine the effects of the courseware.

Other teaching & learning related certificates

• Digital Pedagogy Fellow certificate, from the Center for Teaching and Learning: Certifies that the earner has received and put into practice basic pedagogy around planning and organizing a course with a strong online component, such as designing the “W” version of a campus course or designing a MOOC or online/self-paced module.
• Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, from the GSI Resource Center.
• Learning Sciences Certificate in Instructional Design, Learning Technologies, and Education Research, offered through the Graduate School of Education, prepares graduate students for careers involving STEM education design and research. Requires graduate standing.

Part-time, summer, full-time opportunities to teach CS

• The Bay Area Chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association has an associated Google Groups mailing list csta-golden-gate@googlegroups.com where K-12 CS teaching announcements are posted.
• Join the digital pedagogy (internal) list for announcements relating to digital pedagogy workshops, events, etc.
• The (internal) CS Education Topics mailing list is also used for announcements about CS teaching.
• There is a Piazza group for postsecondary CS teaching positions.
• The Cal Teach program has a list of teaching-related opportunities and scholarships.

SESAME (Studies in Engineering, Science, and Mathematics Education)

The SESAME program leads to a doctoral degree in science, mathematics, technology, or engineering education. The program is designed to give graduates advanced expertise in a STEM discipline as well as in educational theory and research methodologies. SESAME produces scholars who can communicate effectively with scientists and engineers as well as with educational researchers and practitioners. SESAME students are expected to have or be in the process of obtaining at least Masters-level competency in their STEM discipline.
